WESTERN CANADA THEATRE VOLUNTEER BOARD MEMBER OPPORTUNITY
Western Canada Theatre (WCT), is a premiere charitable not-for-profit theatre and is honoured to be Kamloops’ own nationally-acclaimed live professional theatre. WCT’s main activities are in Kamloops, on the ancestral territory of Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc.
WCT is seeking creative, community-minded individuals to join our Board of Directors.
We are seeking members who will share the following vision:
- Deepen Western Canada Theatre’s capacity to carry out its mission
- Support WCT’s mandate in developing and premiering important theatre works in partnership with local and national arts organizations, and in creating relevant, vibrant pieces of theatre for a wide-range of audiences
- Building a sense of community and culture around the arts in Kamloops
- Deepen work around decolonization, equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in policy and culture
- Continue to build a socially, environmentally, and financially sustainable and resilient organization
- Build brand strengths and consolidate marketing and outreach
- Expand on fund and audience development opportunities
- Assist in the creation and support of vibrant cultural facilities
Function/Role
The Board of Directors oversee and support the Western Canada Theatre in meeting the mandate and overall strategic plan for the theatre. Board Members are expected to participate in the governance and direction of policies, programs, and practices.
Responsibilities and Expectations
Attend 6-8 scheduled general Board Meetings per year, and the Annual General Meeting. Meetings are held in-person, with some online capability.
Serve on committees or projects as appropriate based on area(s) of expertise/interest (approximately 6 meetings per year per committee).
Provide leadership, governance and oversight in area(s) of expertise, as it relates to theatre activities, expenditures, budgeting, and strategic planning.
Act as an ambassador for the theatre, representing the WCT in the community, and in attendance at WCT events.
Participate in the selection (as required) and oversight of the Artistic Director and Managing Director.
Provide consultative services as needed to WCT’s Senior Management as required.
Serve a minimum two-year term as a Board Director.
Qualifications & Skills – preferred but not essential
- A strong appreciation for Western Canada Theatre, and for the performing arts
- Passionate about inclusive and diverse practices.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Previous experience working or volunteering in one or more of the following areas: Non-Profit Sector, Boards and Governance, Law / Risk Management, Financial Accounting and Audit, Theatre and Performing Arts, Leadership, Government Relations and Advocacy, Marketing, Fundraising, Media Relations, Human Resources, Urban Planning (Facilities, Architecture, Real Estate).
